If a person was married many years ago in

If a person was married many years ago in massachusetts and wants to remarry years later but doesn't want to mention the first marriage on their marriage certificate, will this have any repercussions or will it simply not matter? Will anyone check/care?

If your previous marriage has not been finalized say by a divorce or legal separation findings by the court, then any subsequent marriage will not be valid because in the United States multiple marriages are not allowed.

Thanks for the reply. Most marriage licenses require that you provide the number of marriages you have had, this is to keep a record and protect an individual if there is a subsequent divorce. Can't guarantee that no one will check, but the probable answer is NO, they will not check. Please be aware: However if there is a subsequent divorce the lawyer representing your subsequent husband might discover this information and then use it against you and argue that you were concealing an important factor to your husband in deciding to marry you in the first place. Bottom line: Be safe and report.
